한용운 시의 서사성 연구

영문초록 : "Silence of Love", the representative colection of poems of Han Yong-un(pen name : Manhae), was published in May 1926 at Andong Sogwan. More than 400 research papers have so far been produced in prove the superiority of his poems and the importance of his place in the history of Korean literature. Lots of critics discussed each of the 88 poems in "Silence of Love", but recently some scholars began to view the book in terms of serial poems. "Silence of Love" is concerning "My" enlightenment after the central character "I" parts with "Love". In this study, the book is regarded not as a collection of different individual poems but as a long narrative. Through the analysis of symbolic systems of the text, each descriptive element was obtained for a detailed analysis. The following is the conclusion : 1. "Silence of Love" comprises a complete story of "My" parting with "Love" in a real situation and "My" eventual enlightenced meeting with "Love" on the basis of Manhae's elaborate intention. 2. The book is clearly equipped with three narrative elements of characters, events, and background. Besideds "Me" and "Love", some characters appear, such as Kim(Shin), a zen priest, Non-gae, Kyeworhyang, and Ta-gol. There me also some reactive people who interfere with the love between "Me" and "Love". The situational background depicting separation is real, too. 3. The book's story goes through four steps of beginning, development, charge, and conclusion. Centered on the behavior of the poetic self, the narrative starts with the sorrow and pains of separation and leads to the perception and realization of meeting again. 4. The anthology's 88 poems had key lines reflecting a consistent narrative on the whole. 5. The anthology's style is explanatory and narrative and Manhae seems th divide syllable groups according to their meanings. Some critics hold his style is not condensed, but his descriptive style came from his own creativity and intention to make a story-containing style against the orthodox style popular at that time. 6. The book's story is superficially a love story between "Love" and "Me", but it is rather about realizing the essence or reality of love or human life. Instead of Partial poetic interpretation, therefore, the author's intention should be revealed in the context of a whole story. In short, Manhae Han Yong-un's "Silence of Love" is a clear example of narrativeness as a book of lyrical poems dealing with a manifest story based on emotions and rhythms. / 한글초록 : 만해 한용운의 시집 『님의 침묵』은 1926년 5월 안동서관에서 초간되었다. 이 후 지금까지 400여 편의 연구 논문이 발표되었다. 이는 작품의 우수성은 물론, 만해의 문학사적 위치가 높음을 짐작케 한다. 처음 많은 논자들은 각 시편들에 대한 논의를 하였다. 그러나 근자에는 몇 분이 연작시로 보고 연구하였다. 『님의 침묵』에는 88편의 시가 수록되어 있다. 내용은 <나>란 인물이 <님>과 이별한 후, 님에 대한 정신적 깨달음을 얻어 만난다는 것이다. 그러므로, 본 논문은 만해 한용운의 시 집 『님의 침묵』을 개별적 시의 모음집이 아닌, 하나의 이야기로 구성된 연작시 집으로 보고, 작품 속의 서사성을 논하였다. 연구 방법은 먼저 텍스트의 기호체계를 중심으로 분석하여, 서사적 요소들을 찾아내고, 다시 각 요소들을 구체적으로 분석하였다. 그 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻게 되었다. 첫째, 시집 『님의 침묵』은 만해의 치밀한 의도에 의해 하나의 이야기로 구성된 시집이다. <나>와 <님>의 이별이란 현실적 상황에서 이야기가 시작되어, 몇 단계의 구성단계를 거쳐, 만남으로 끝을 맺는 이야기임을 확인하였다. 둘째, 이 시집은 인물, 사건, 배경 등 서사적 구성요소가 뚜렷이 갖추어져 있다. <나>와 <님>이란 주인물과, <검(신), 선사(禪師), 논개, 계월향, 타골>등 부인물이 등장하고 있다. 그리고 <나>와 <님>의 사랑을 방해하는 <반동적 인물>도 등장하고 있다. 또, 이별이란 상황적 배경도 분명히 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 셋째, 이 시집 속의 이야기를 <발단, 전개, 전환, 결말>등 4개 군으로 그 구성 단계를 나눌 수 있었다. 이는 시적 자아의 행위 중심으로 나눈 것이다. 내용은 이별에서 이별의 슬픔과 고통으로 전개되고, 만남의 지각으로 전환되어, 결국 만남이란 대단원으로 끝을 맺고 있음을 알 수 있다. 넷째, 시집 「님의침묵」에 수록된 88편을 첫편부터 끝편까지 각 시의 중심 시행들을 찾아,하나의 이야기로 엮어 보았다. 그 결과 하나의 뚜렷한 줄거리가 있는 이야기로 구성됨을 알게 되었다. 다섯째, 이 시집 시문체가 설명적 담화체이고, 줄글 형태이며, 의미에 따라 어절군 단위로 띄어 쓰고 있다. 많은 논자들이 만해의 시체가 축약되지 못하고, 설명적이라는 비판을 하고 있다. 그러나 만해의 시체는 서사성을 갖춘 시집을 만들기 위한 의도적인 것이다. 또 이야기를 담기 위해서 창조한 독창적 시체로 보인다. 정형시체가 유행하던 당시대에는 획기적인 시의 변혁으로 볼 수 있다. 여섯째, 표면적으로는 <나>와 <님>의 단순한 사랑 이야기로 되어 있으나, 내면적으로는 사랑의 본질=실체틀 깨닫는 이야기이다. 사랑의 본질을 깨닫는 일은 결국 인간 삶의 본질을 깨닫는 일이다. 단순히 부분적 시의 해석보다 전체적 이야기 체계 속에서 작가의 의도가 파악되어야 할 것이다. 이상에서 본 논문은 만해 시집 「님의침묵」의 서사성을 규명하여 보았다. 이 시집은 분명 서사적 이야기를 담고 있음을 확인하였다. 다만 이야기를 시의 본질인 정서성과 운율성에 맞추어 표현한 서정시집임이 분명하다.
