520 b영문초록 : This study was focused on Martha Graham's early dancing activities, especially on her from representative works in the 1940s. Since her debut in 1926 she haas produced about 180 performances ofill 1990. Graining acknowledgment as a talented ostist in the 1930s, she began to show her own new and various styles and movements in the next decade. In this research, a video tape containint her renowned works in the 1940s was analyzed to leveal the followinglesult The 4 works discussed here are "Spring of Apalachia"(1944), "A Messenger into the Maze"(1947), "Night Trip" (1947), and "An Angelis play"(1948). To sum up their charactoristics, they described the woman's happiness having a new family li8fe, her strong will getting out of darkness, her tragedy, and the joy of love. Reflecting Graham's own uneasy life, they were wonderfilly upgraded into the world of her faithful dancing. The factors of stage art, in particular wstume and props, in "Night Trip" employed very symbelic methods to increase inmost meanings. The stage space made best use of her simple dance and it ssymbolic significance, while the apparatus like the rope, the mantle and the crddade heloed intensify the role of the props and the message of the dance. "A Messenger in to the Mare" stands for abstraction, that is, the extraction of essential human feelings. Furthermore, another characteristic is noticed. Her stage expression also represents abstraction to express such invisible image as the darkness and fear. "Spring of Apalachia" deals wit something very practical, future-oriented and American. The hard and squared movement into the soft and fluent are is fighly skillful and lyrical. Adding to the success of this work are the stage mood like a play and the expression technique to show the rapid tum of overall events. Lastly, "An Angel's play" depicted the technics of fiexible movement based on the turn-out posture. Unlike her after works, this performance was sanewhout brave to go beyond dramatic expression and aim to pure dancing, In conclusion, Martha expressed the bible, literature, Greek myths, and American life stories in condensed harmony with the dance drama, What's more, Noguchi's stage art as well as the use of various pauses and proper movements contributed to the succes of her dancing. Also, er modem dance attained all the possible antistic couperation, especially modern musicians including Lovis Host, Aron Kopland, Karl Nielson, and Wissiam Shuman. Thus her dancing quality grew up and symbolically proved the whole human existence having a lot to do with all artistic form.
