영문초록 : The purpose of this study is to analyize the periodical, spiritual background that is affected in the work of formation and the characteristics of his work and formative meanings over 30 years for lighting up David Smith's metal sculpture. He did his best to express fidelitly the essence of art through his works. As his sculpture, the meaning of the work is adopting constructivism into the new concept beyond cubism. From the Picasso and Gonzaless, he made up sculpture such as painting in space, are interested in the mysterical, meaningless simbolization in surrealism of 1930's, 1940's. Also He made up the sculpture of totemism expressing his thought In the end of 1950's he set up the concept of construct sculpture as to connecting to use welding method. In 1960's he expressed more stronger, simple structure frame than shape in his work series, created the new techniques that connected by welding machine after cutting the steel plate into the introduction of metal sculpture, and made up the works that rectangle, circle, cubic type made into steel is connected by welding. The sole formative language differencials between America's abstract sculpture and European's metal sculpture played an important role in the world. He exploded the historical concept of sculpture, step into widing the techniques of expression and form area of sculpture using Object and metal meterials. In conclusion, Smith used metal welding and assemble of given parts into the techniques of expression, and remained image related with surrealsim. His construct sculture itself' was showed up the language of sculpture, and estimated by origin in the modem sculpture of America. Therefore, He created the huge construct frame using cube and circle made in streel, and then formed the important relation for artist's influence and minimal art
