520 b영문초록 : The ceramic industry in the dynasty of Choson was begun under the control of government. The dynasty, a caste society, formed two upper classes, Yangban (Tong ban; scholars and soban; generals) into its nobility arid below these classes established an institution called Chabjik (low mixed jobs) to which manual workers belonged to manufacture industrial goods. Among the workers under the govermental control, artisans skilled for ceramics registered in Kyonkugtaechon were total 479, 380 persons working in the capital and 99 persons in the provinces. From the Chojusimuso written by Chojun around the end of Korea dynasty and the begining of Choson dynasty, thatis, before the establishment of Chabjik, we can see that theceramic production was under the strict control of the dynasty from the starting point. The white china in the Choson was named for the king's vessel in the reign of king Sejongand a regulation prohibiting the use of the white china out-side the royal palace was decreed to distinguish the use ofking and of his subject in the reign of king Sejo. So, forthe early 150 years of the dynasty the white china was usedexclusively by the royal family and its relatives. From the eighth year of king kwanghaegun's rule, the illustrious officials were permitted to use ordinary white china but the general public was not granted a right to use it until the end of Choson. The outline of this study based on the above facts are a as follows. 1. Until now, the period when king began to use the white china exclusively was vaguely understood as the 32 reigning years of King Sejong. But, the exact time when the white china replaced the silver vessel as the King's vessel was the 29th year of King Sejon's rule was examined and the reason for the substantiation was revealed that the Choson dynasty must pay tribute to china with gold and silver goods. 2. According to the past studies, it is known that not only King used the white china exclusively but the subject including provincial common people also used it. But, the fact is that the regulation decreed at December 4, the fourth year of King Sejo's reign was interpreted beyond its original meaning unnecessarily. This evidence is based on the examination of the literature and relics of the period. 3. The interpretation of the record concerning the white china of Seoul used in the six military encampments in the authentic history of' Chungjong 32nd year, December was "the prohibition law was decreed because the common people in the province generally we the white China", so students reconized that the royal family and the common people used the China altogether. But, the six military encampments should be understood as army barracles under the command of generals responsible for the region and the prohibition in the encampments should be interpreted as the effect of decree proclained at 12th year of King Sejo. 4. The ordinary white china used by the illustrious officials from the eighth year of King Kwanghaegun was regarded as lower guality china, but for the distinction between King and his officials, the King's vessel was glazed with ornaments and the officials' vessel wasn't. 5. Because the permission in the King Kwanghaegun's reignenlarged the demand of the white china, the use of Punch'ongsagi (Kind of porcelain) was decreased. So a great changed kin the ceramic history was taken place. Until now, it is known that the extinction of Punch'ongsagi was caused by the ,Japanese Kidnapping of Korean potters during the Japanese invasion (1592-1598). But, the internal factors were strong enough to stop Punch'ongsagi production. 6. The fact that the general public didn't use the white china until the end of Choson dynasty was also found out. But it is guessed that because the government's control couldn't reach the people's everyday use of vessel, some rich people might have used the white china. According to the related literature, earthware, porcelain woodenware and brassware were used by the common people. In chronological relic epitaphs for the dead without any official ranle and their wives were possibly made of the white china. Therefore, future study concerning this should be continued.
