520 b영문초록 : My purpose in this paper in to study the aestheticism in Salom□ by structural analysis. Wilde`s version of art for art`s sake is defined by his opposition to three contemporary attitudes: realism; utilitarian moralism; and the idea of art as self-expression. Against the realist, he asserts that, so far from imitating life, art must improve on it. Against the moralist, he asserts that 'all art is perfectly useless'. Against the idea that we are to look in art for the meaning intended by the artist, he retorts that 'the meaning of any beautiful thing is, at least, as much in the soul of him who looks at it, as it was in his soul who wrought it'. He though that art exists only for life. So his writing show no trace of what we call 'social consciousness'. If such attitudes of wilde indicate a paychological aberration, the aberration was a product of broad socio-economic, rather than mere private, conditions and was much more characteristic of his times as a whole. There are three important elements to give unity to the structure of this paly. They are repetitions, the symbol of the moon, and the colour imagery. While referred to his Salome as a 'beautiful coloured, musical thing'. He evidently drew hints from 'repetitions', as from the complex scenic scheme in while the landscape has a voice and changes of sound or colour presage the catastrophes of the human drama. 'The symbol of the moon`is a kind of brilliant dramatic device of this play. It gives information, to foreshadow action that is to come, and gives this action an aura of grandeur and even of mystery. The poetic substructure based on 'the colour imagery' including 'repetions' and 'the symbol of the moon' increases the aesthetic beauty of this play and gives intense unity to Salome. It shows Wilde`s eagerness to the doctrine of aestheticism that attatches a high value to 'from' in art, the value of a work art being dependent on form rather than on subject-matter. Wilde opposes physical desire as represented by Salom□ against the constrictions of law and society as represented by Herod and Jokanaan. Salom□`s death is nemesis : yet also a kind of violent release from dark, corrupt world which has disfigured Salom□`s passion. In salom□ the repetitions, the symobol of the moon, and the colour imagary are essential in developing theme, and the conflict in personalities and the values they represent are embodied whtiin the play, providing unity.
