The main purpose of this study is to examine the driving forces and outcomes of university-industry collaboration among Korean companies. In recent innovation research, the main focus has been on the perspective that innovation occurs within systems, and there has been increasing interest in the role of universities within innovation systems. The technological capabilities, talents, and research capacity possessed by universities are important resources within the entire system. Despite this significance, research on the role of universities within the innovation system in South Korea is not sufficient. This study utilizes data representing the entire manufacturing industry in Korea to empirically analyze the driving forces behind company-university collaboration for technology innovation within the perspective of the national innovation system and examines the outcomes of such collaboration. Using the 2018 Korean Innovation Survey, the results of the probit analysis indicate that technology innovation collaboration between companies and universities in Korea is mainly induced by government financial support but does not have a significant impact on actual technological innovation outcomes of companies. This suggests that while technology innovation collaboration between companies and universities is incentivized through government financial support, it is insufficient to produce tangible effects.
