This article studied on the life of Ella Ibernia Graham, a female missionary at the Gwangju territory of the Southern Presbyterian mission, and her perception of Korea and Korean women in order to examine the relationship between the missionaries and Koreans. Ella Ibernia Graham was a Scottish American born and raised in North Carolina since 1869. In 1907, she was sent to Korea as a professional missionary, worked as a female itinerating missionary in Gwangju territory, and died in 1930. She was buried in the graveyard of a missionary in Gwangju. Long-term stays in Gwangju-Jeonnam area and itinerating missionary activities expanded contact with the local community, and she tried to understand Koreans and Korean culture. Ella Ibernia Graham was interested in Koreans' religious ideas and Korea-Japan political relations, which is the stage for missionary activities. She thought that Koreans had a religion. The folk beliefs of villages and families witnessed during the itinerating activities served as the basis for judgment. However, she understood the faith of Koreans as evil spirit worship, and thought that Christianity was the only religion that could save both body and spirit. Thus, for Christian missionary work, while sympathizing with the loss of Korean national sovereignty, she neglected their request for political salvation (=independence), and cooperated with the Japanese colonial authorities while advocating the non-politicalization of Christianity. The interaction between Ella Ibernia Graham and Koreans is well revealed in the perception of Korean women who were the targets of missionary activities. At first, she paid attention to the low status of Korean women, and looked at poor women in Jeonnam as objects of enlightenment and benefit. However, Korean women, including bible women, were important partners of Ella Ibernia Graham, and voluntarily absorbed Christianity. In addition, just as Ella Ibernia Graham observed Koreans, Koreans also observed American women and evaluated them based on their conventional ideas. Koreans looked at American women with curious eyes, and Ella Ibernia Graham hoped that she would be seen as a virtuous woman even in the Korean morality. The problem was that she was an old single woman whom Koreans found undesirable. For Christian missionary work, Ella Ibernia Graham had to maintain friendly relations not only with the Japanese colonial authorities but also with Koreans. So she did not go against the perception of women in Korea as much as possible and sometimes tried to fit the idea herself.
