The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of maternal overprotection on young children’s grit and the moderating effects of young children’s playfulness. In this study, the maternal overprotection and young children’s grit were selected as an independent and dependent variable respectively. In addition, the young children’s playfulness was selected as moderator. The participants included 260 mothers of 4 to 5 year-old children in J area, and 218 participants were finally used to analyze the data. The major findings were as follows: First, the level of maternal overprotection and grit were a little higher than the average, while the level of young children’s playfulness was much higher than the average. Second, the maternal overprotection showed significantly negative effect with young children’s playfulness and grit. This means that as the level of mother’s overprotection increases, the level of a young children’s grit and playfulness decreases. Moreover, the young children’s playfulness showed significantly negative effect with young children’s grit. This shows that as the level of young children’s playfulness increases, the level of a young children’s grit also increases. Third, young children’s playfulness had a moderating effect between maternal overprotection and young children’s grit. The significance of this study lies in confirming that children’s playfulness serves as a mitigating factor against negative influences on children from environmental factors such as maternal overprotection. Furthermore, this study is significant in providing foundational data for the development of parent education programs related to playfulness and grit.
