Kim Gyu-sam’s webtoon Pegasus Market (Ssamnida Cheollimamateu) has been adapted and transformed by television animation, webtoons, television drama, and web drama. This webtoon uses black comedy to deal with various issues in the labor market, such as unemployment, non-contract employees, and wages. This article compares the webtoon Pegasus Market to the television drama Pegasus Market, focusing on its narrative and televisual changes through adaptation and crossmedia storytelling. My analysis navigates how these changes in the television drama alter the webtoon Pegasus Market’s aims and scope. This comparative investigation sheds light on the politics of crossmedia storytelling available by the producers and televisual expression. Beginning in 2010, Kim Gyu-sam’s Pegasus Market focused on the narrative of Korean male breadwinners, who experienced unemployment and non-contract employment after the Korean financial crisis of 1997. Compared to this original content, the television drama Pegasus Market aired in 2019 and highlighted Korean society in the 2010s under the auspice of director Baek Seung-ryong and writer Kim Sol-ji, who experienced the Korean financial crisis of 1997 during their teenagers and the 2007-2008 financial crisis during their young adult ages. The television drama, therefore, expands the scope of its original content to discuss non-contract employment among young adults. Korean young adults have been labeled as the “three giving-up” (sampo) generation because of the low employment rate, which impacted their dating and marriage lives and pregnancy rates. Furthermore, while the webtoon lacks the narratives of female non-contract workers and foreign migrant workers, the television drama uses its televisual techniques such as subtitles, music, and performative elements to highlight the issues of women and foreign migrant laborers. Ultimately, the television drama seeks to overturn cultural and industrial hierarchies through its crossmedia storytelling. The politics of crossmedia storytelling in the television drama Pegasus Market proves the necessity of research on crossmedia storytelling as popular culture influences social discourses.
