Thirty years have passed since Korean-Chinese Diplomatic Relations were established. However, Korean-Chinese in Korea still live a life of borderline people, neither Korean nor Chinese, with trauma caused by “confusion of identity.” This study analyzes the characteristics of their mental trauma and attempts to develop a poetry therapy program. A poem published in “Fellow Countrymen Literature,” a Korean-Chinese literary magazine, notes two of their characteristics of trauma. First, anger and hatred toward Korean society, and second, self-hatred and self-torture. This was directly linked to their historical trauma or victim mentality and led to the logic that Korean society had differentiated them. By contrast, the process of introspection and the subsequent attempt to become a “subject” was identified in some works. This can also be viewed as the therapeutic effect of poetry. Therefore, we developed a poetry therapy program that uses poetry to allow participants to experience the expansion of perception and achieve introspection. In this process, we aim to heal the wounds from conflict and suppressed mental anguish (trauma). Based on the treatment process used in the existing poetry treatment theory, we analyzed the healing nature of poetry and designed a five-step treatment process for Korean-Chinese in Korea to determine the methodology of our program as follows. (1) A stage to persuade participants of the effectiveness of poetry therapy, (2) a semiotic poetry and major image selection stage, (3) a trauma discovery stage, (4) a trauma realization stage, and (5) a trauma core finding stage. This study argues that for Korean-Chinese in Korea to achieve mental and social stability and promote friendly coexistence with Korean society, actions to resolve their trauma are necessary. Therefore, this study is an attempt to ultimately free Korean-Chinese people from trauma and further drive them toward a “change in perception” in which they are transformed from “others” to “subjects.”
