This study identifies the mechanism leading to citation by demonstrating the conditions under which the usage of a socially attracted academic paper is activated. It verified whether there was a moderated mediation effect of open access (OA) in the path in which social mention leads to citation through usage. This study compared the field of medical science (1,689 articles) and humanities and social science (833 articles) using articles which have been published within 2020/01/01 - 2021/12/07 with the support of NRF (National Research Foundation, Korea). Using Process Macro, there was a mediation effect of usage in the relationship between social mentions and citations in both fields. However, the index of moderated mediation by OA was significant only for medical science (B = 0.043, 95% CI [0.001, 0.104]). In the medical field, the indirect effect in the path is greater when articles are OA than non-OA. However, in the fields of humanities and social sciences, it is difficult to explain the significant difference between OA and non-OA in the indirect path leading to citations by utilizing socially attracted articles B = -0.28, 95% CI [-0.66, 0.012]).
