In this paper, I compared Baekseok and Lilke’s poems. This was because it was considered that the comparison with Lilke’s poems could be an important reference point in clarifying self-consciousness as a poet, which appears strongly in Baekseok’s later poems. As the name of Lilke appeared in Baekseok’s poems and the translation of Lilke began to be actively carried out in the Korean literature after the mid-1930s, it could be assumed that Baekseok was clearly aware of Lilke’s poems. The two poets had great similarity in that they reached the highest spiritual height in the later poems that used experience as the driving force of the poem and especially based on abundant wandering experiences. Lilke valued experience the most in poems writing and conducted a voluntary wandering throughout his life to obtain a crystal of poems that matched his life. Compared to Lilke, Baekseok’s wandering overlapped with the colonial situation. He sharply expressed the gap between reality and ideals between regret over the collapse of the community. The two poets were similar in that they had wandering experiences and continued their inner discoveries and spiritual overcoming with them. For Lilke, solitude served as a sacred process to reach his inner hometown as a modern person alienated from high civilization. For Baekseok, solitude contained a more desperate sense of alienation and sorrow felt by a poet in colonies who lost his homeland and hometown. The two poets showed something in common that they represent the poet’s pain and maturity, especially through the image of “tree.” In the quiet and passive posture of the tree, Lilke revealed a somewhat ideological and ideal tendency to see through the value of patience and the creative characteristics of silence, which was essential to the poet’s maturity. On the other hand, Baekseok overcame the bitter remorse caused by long wandering and lethargy through the process of empirical and desperate awakening and reached the representation of the poet as a rare, firm and neat tree. The comparison with Lilke’s poems served as a good reference for understanding self-consciousness as a poet deepening in later Baekseok’s poems. Baekseok showed the process of facing himself thoroughly and maturing as a poet through the process of mental overcoming, in a miserable and desperate state of losing his hometown in his colonial homeland. The development process of this later Baekseok’s poems was comparable to that of a world-class poet named Lilke.
