(Background and Purpose) Chinese architecture before the modern transition period was organic structures based on building technology of craftsmen. After the 1840s, Chinese architecture has developed dramatically under the influence of foreign architectural culture. And until 1910s, localization architecture theory with unique characteristics in China came to be valued, and it is essential to raise the level of Chinese architecture. This study aims to analyze and summarize changes of architectural thought and its reason, which related to localization architecture theory in modern China. (Method) This study attempts to analyze the Soviet architectural thoughts which were introduced in China in the 1950s, and combined with the political background of society. And selected the Chongqing People's Auditorium and the Great Hall of People as empirical studies, which were deeply influenced by the Soviet architectural thoughts. (Results) In the early 1950s, China directly imported Stalin's “National Form, Socialist Content” architectural thought. And the architectural thought shows on the Chongqing People's Auditorium as the enormous traditional roof and splendid architectural decoration of the Ming and Qing Dynasty. Among them, the ‘National Form’ ideology was expressed by traditional roofs, building materials and colors. And the ‘Socialist Content’ ideology was expressed as ‘the people are the masters of the state’ by breaking down the hierarchy of traditional roofs and using royal building materials for people. Differently, in the late 1950s, in response to the major changes in the political environment, Chinese officials implemented a localized interpretation of the architectural ideology of “National Form, Socialist Content”. At that time, it shows on the Great Hall of People as a large area of light colored stone while reducing the traditional architectural element. The Great Hall of People, subtly maintained the ‘National Form’ in the use of the exposed part of the traditional structures. In addition, it also conveyed the simplicity of ‘Socialist Content’ with simple and tough stone building materials, it represented the strength and pure personality of people. (Conclusion) Through the design and construction process of Chinese public architecture in the 1950s, we can see the traces of active introduction of foreign architectural ideas and ideological reinterpretation based on the domestic situation, and we can also see the potential to build a localized architecture theory. However, the architectural ideas presented by non-specialists national leaders and government officials are unprofessional and far from the process of architectural structure, and it is difficult to reflect on architecture in a short time. The previous discussion shows the importance of understanding the intention and meaning of the traditional structure, and giving the modern meaning to develop the traditional culture elements, instead of unconditionally accepting foreign architectural culture and theories.
