Takeoff weight is an important factor in aircraft performance required for aircraft operations. If aircraft takeoff weight can be predicted, it can be used to determine the optimal altitude of the aircraft and, the fuel consumption with higher accuracy, and calculate expected carbon emissions. However, takeoff weights contain sensitive information such as payload that can infer the operating strategy of an airline, so it is prohibited from being released to the outside. Researchers have proposed several estimation models to estimate aircraft takeoff weights to work around an airline withholding those information. As the demand for accurate takeoff weight estimation continues to rise, this study began to propose a simple estimation method from the perspective of pilots. In previous researches, estimation models were proposed by analyzing aircraft acceleration rates on the runway or initial climb rates to estimate takeoff weight. However, researchers identified the accuracy of that estimation method can be impacted based on engine thrust settings set by the pilots. The goal of this research is to propose a more simple and accurate method for estimating takeoff weights. To do so, variables that are controllable and less affected by a pilot’s decision should be selected. For these reasons, data from aircraft tracking services and manuals referenced by pilots are used in this paper. This variable is V2 speed. Since the aircraft climbs with this speed to a certain altitude after taking off, V2 speed data can be easily collected from surveillance data such as ADS-B website. Aircraft flight manuals states that there are several factors that affect V2 speed determination, but among them, takeoff weight is the most closely related. Based on these two ideas, V2 speed is used as an important parameter for estimating takeoff weight in this study. V2 speed is related to five variables. The variables are takeoff weight, flaps setting, engine deration, airport temperature, and pressure altitude. Excluding the takeoff weight, the variables of the flaps setting and the engine thrust setting are decided by the pilot, and the variables of the airport temperature and pressure altitude are environmental factors. According to this study, flap setting can be predicted by comparing V2 speeds of aircrafts with similar flight time. The following is the engine thrust setting. The reasons why V2 speed was designated in this study is that the engine thrust does not significantly affect the V2 speed computation. Therefore, the average value of engine deration was applied to the equation of takeoff weight estimation. The temperature and pressure altitude value for estimation method can be substituted by using weather information at the time of takeoff. It was confirmed that these four variables(excluding takeoff weight) can be accurately estimated or have less affect on determining V2 speeds. By identifying the relationship between the V2 speed and these variables, an equation of estimating the takeoff weight can be derived. In this paper, the aircraft model used for estimating the takeoff weight is the Boeing 737-800 (B737-800). Therefore, the estimation equation is also limited to this aircraft model. However, the main suggestion of this paper is that using V2 speed can enhance the accuracy of the takeoff weight estimation in the entire range of weight rather than average estimation proposed in previous researches. The takeoff weight estimation method in this paper consists of five steps. First, the flaps setting of an aircraft should be judged by analyzing the V2 speed increment. Usually, the B737-800 aircraft uses flaps 5 setting during takeoff. However, based on flight plans obtained through Air traffic services (ATS), flap settings can be predicted by comparing V2 speeds of aircrafts with similar flight duration. Next, the V2 speed of an aircraft should be sampled through flight tracking data service providers such as ADS-B website. After that, the sampled V2 speed value requires re-calibration with current temperature and pressure altitude. Finally, by substituting the calibrated V2 speed value into the suggested equation, the estimated takeoff weight can be obtained. To validate the accuracy of the proposed method, flight data collected from actual flights were used. The data was collected directly by pilots on 66 flights that departed from Incheon and Gimpo airports from June 2022 to December 2023. This flight data contains actual takeoff weight values applied when calculating takeoff performance and V2 speeds calculated based on actual weights. The verification procedure first extracted the V2 speeds of aircrafts corresponding to 66 flights from aircraft tracking data service providers. The takeoff weight is estimated with the extracted V2 speed, the error is validated by comparing the estimating and actual takeoff weight. The result of takeoff weight estimation method in this paper is shown to have a MAE (mean absolute error) of 2.55% MTOW. In previous researches, a pilot’s decision was pointed out as a limitation factor of the study and for this reason, the proposed method was said to yield only an average estimation. However, the method of using V2 speed in this paper enables to estimate within an entire range of takeoff weights. To validate this, estimation values of the top 30% and the bottom 30% MTOW were checked separately. The result shows MAE of 2.88% and 2.09%, respectively, confirming a high accuracy rate is maintained within the entire range of takeoff weights. This study proposes a simple and accurate method of estimating aircraft takeoff weight using flight tracking data service providers. Improved takeoff weight estimation can be used to accurately predict the optimal altitude of an aircraft, which can be used as the basis for effective altitude allocation by air traffic control agencies or analyzing the efficiency of the airspace structure. In addition, it is helpful to improve the accuracy of calculating carbon emissions by making it possible to predict fuel consumption of aircrafts in greater detail. This thesis is expected to be foundational research that can contribute to study on airspace structure analysis or carbon emissions estimation.
검증 결과는 MAE(Mean absolute error)가 최대 이륙중량 대비 2.55%의 오차 율보였다.
