Currently, China's urban development is transitioning from a phase of rapid growth to a phase of extracting high-quality value from existing assets. As part of municipal construction land, brownfields have received more attention for their potential public value. In brownfield regeneration practices, landscape utilization has become a prominent objective for numerous practical projects. However, the situation in landscape architecture in China is not optimistic. The lack of systematic research and guidance has resulted in a significant disparity in the quality of brownfield regeneration projects. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore brownfield issues from a landscape architecture perspective and seek diverse, effective, and comprehensive solution strategies. The research purpose is to analyze brownfield regeneration in the Beijing-Tianjin-Tang- shan region and explore the landscape design strategies employed in brownfield regeneration. This research differentiated between post-industrial sites, abandoned mine lands, and landfills, analyzing their respective design considerations from a landscape perspective, and formulating specific brownfield regeneration strategies. The analysis results of strategies for post-industrial site regeneration are as follows. First, - vii -post-industrial site regeneration projects in the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan region pursue a diversity of goals such as industrial heritage preservation, cultural creativity, and neighborhood revitalization. Second, the characteristics and spatial levels of the space are enhanced by utilizing the original industrial space, incorporating transitional space, and incorporating industrial facilities of varying heights. Third, the harmonious integration of old and new landscape elements is achieved by using industrial relics and new elements in a rational and harmonious design style that respects the original industrial landscape scenery of the site. Fourth, the design prioritizes ecological soil restoration, utilizing native and adaptable plants and considering phytoremediation's ability to purify contaminated soil. Fifth, modern artistic methods, including sculpture and graffiti art, are used in the design to enhance the industrial landscape's aesthetic and improve the site's vitality by creatively dealing with industrial relics. Sixth, in the aspect of vitalizing the regenerated site, urban events and public activities are actively programmed. The analysis results of strategies for abandoned mine land regeneration are as follows. First, abandoned mine lands in the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan region can be converted into national parks, wetland parks, or neighborhood parks, based on their original conditions and location, according to research on their regeneration. Second, starting with the existing site conditions, the design process optimizes surface morphology, building combinations, and plant space to create new spatial structures and relationships. Additionally, it incorporates traditional Chinese garden techniques and increased facade elements to enhance the park's vertical space. Third, in designing mining facilities, the original roads in the abandoned mine lands are used as the site's basic structure, and original industrial buildings and structures are selectively preserved and transformed into sculptures and tourist facilities through artistic processing. Fourth, ecological restoration uses methods like soil improvement, plant restoration, and water purification to enhance the effects of restoration and reduce maintenance costs after transformation. Fifth, highlighting the historical and cultural significance of mining through authenticity, regional characteristics and symbols can enhance people's sense of identity and belonging to the local community. The analysis results of strategies for landfill regeneration are as follows. First, landfill regeneration in the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan region mainly involves building urban and country parks, with landscape regeneration measures based on the ecological structure formed by the landfill. Second, different terrain reshaping methods are used for different landfill piles, including retaining part of the site's morphology to create microterrain, modifying the site modestly to simulate natural terrain, and eliminating the original morphology of the landfill to create a new spatial structure. Third, the ecological restoration of landfill mainly involves soil improvement and water management, with soil improvement techniques including guest soil, fertilization, and biological improvement, and water management focusing on enhancing visitors' water experi- ences, improving storm water management, and using water treatment systems to purify wastewater. Fourth, design the garden with a hierarchical transportation system to connect different spaces, avoid making significant changes in landscape design for garden ornament arrangements, and make use of waste materials for ornament design. Fifth, phased planting is necessary for plant reconstruction with different strategies used in different stages for improvement, growth, and stability, using native plants with strong adaptability and resistant features such as fast growth, cold and drought resistance.Based on the regeneration research of post-industrial sites, abandoned mine lands, and landfills in the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan region, the following insights have been obtained. First, the issues with post-industrial sites primarily include the presence of massive industrial buildings and structures, flat terrain, and a moderate level of pollution, resulting in relatively higher reuse value. The issues with abandoned mine lands mainly involve severe pollution, surface degradation, limited plant, drastic changes in terrain, and the potential existence of large-scale facilities. The issues with landfills revolve around the long-term accumulation of various types of waste, leading to the most severe nvironmental pollution.Second, brownfield regeneration is a dynamic and long-term process that requires flexibility in environmental design while maintaining the overall construction goals.Third, clear understanding of the distinct characteristics of the three major types of brown-fields provides a holistic approach to regeneration design. Regeneration design should prioritize different site resources and characteristics.Fourth, mixed-use land utilization is the optimal choice for brownfield regeneration. Fifth, assessment of the pollution level of the site is crucial for implementing appropriate restoration methods. The support of ecological restoration techniques is essential for brownfield regeneration.Sixth, in accordance with the site's pollution characteristics, plant selection should be conducted selectively according to the different resistance of plants, with a preference for native tree species. Seventh, incorporating the site's historical and cultural context during the design process can create distinctive brownfield landscapes. Eighth, drawing upon traditional landscape architecture techniques can be beneficial in embracing site-specific and locally sourced materials. Ninth, integratingindustrialbuildingsandstructuresintotheregenerationprocessasindustrial heritage, alongwiththeutilizationofaestheticconceptsandartisticdesigntechniques, presents anexcellentopportunityforbrownfieldregeneration. This research focused on the Beijing-Tianjin-Tangshan region and explored the core issues and challenges of various brownfield regenerations from a landscape architecture perspective. The systematic exploration of the practical situation and design strategies for brownfield regeneration in this region provides essential references and practical solutions for future brownfield landscape design in China. Also it serves as a valuable resource for research and practice in similar areas.
