Following the COVID-19 outbreak, institutions have been forced to transition from traditional offline learning or working to distance learning and working at an unprecedented rate. Video conferencing systems and metaverse systems are used to facilitate this new trend. However, previous studies have yet to thoroughly examine the differences between video conferencing and metaverse systems in users’ intention to return to the system. In this paper, we compare the impact of differences in user experience on user behavior under the two systems through students' intention to return to the metaverse system and the video conferencing system in a distance education context. The study used a field experiment approach and the results showed that social awareness in the metaverse system was more positive in increasing users’ return intention than in the video conferencing system. The results theoretically broaden the users' behavior study in the metaverse system. There are practical implications for institutions implementing distance working/learning as well as for system development companies.
