As the spread of smartphones has expanded and we have entered the era ofsmartphone popularization, the change to a mobile environment centered on "dataconsumption" has accelerated. With the acceleration of this change in the mobileenvironment, users have been able to experience changes in the design of corporatelogos on mobile devices and media platforms with different screens. This phenomenonshows that logotypes need to be malleable and adaptable to cope with the changingenvironment, and they need to be able to convey brand values in new media andplatforms while maintaining a consistent brand image. As a result, companies aremaking strategic changes to their logotypes to better communicate their brand toconsumers, especially with the popularization of smartphones and the rise of variousmobile platforms. Although logotypes are constantly changing, it has not beenunderstood in what form they are changing and in what direction they are changing. This study analyzes the logotypes of companies that have changed their logotypessince 2013, when the shift to a mobile environment accelerated, and identifies thefactors that led to the changes, so that modern companies can use them whendeveloping or improving their logotypes. First, we examined the logotypes of companiesthat changed their logotypes in Interbrand's 2021 World's 100 Best Companies and 2022Korea's 50 Best Companies, and selected the logotypes of 41 companies that havechanged their logotypes since the era of smartphone popularization in 2013 to thepresent. Next, we summarized the components and characteristics of logotypes basedon typography through a review of prior research and developed an analysisframework classified into nine items, and based on this, we compared the changes inthe logotypes of 41 companies classified as before and after the change by overlayingthem respectively. Finally, we quantified the results of the analysis by applying it toAxle-System and classified them according to the field of the company to specificallyidentify the change factors. As a result, we found that the characteristics of corporate logotypes changed frommulti-colored to monochromatic and from complex to simple. In addition, serifsdisappeared and the X-height increased, spacing changed from narrow to wide tonormal spacing, and the thickness of strokes changed from thin to thick to normalthickness, approaching a standardized appearance. Finally, there were minimal changesin case, flat and tall, and straight and curved lines. From this, we can see thatlogotypes are becoming simpler and more standardized in recent years, regardless ofthe industry. This change can be attributed to the influence of universal design, which targets abroader audience than a specific customer. The logos of museums in Korea and abroadhave recently become simpler, utilizing typography in simple typefaces. It seems thatmuseums, whose role is to convey historical content and culture to a wide range ofpeople, are changing their logo design to be recognizable and accessible to as manypeople as possible. Second, the smaller size of the interface can be seen as an effectof the characteristics of the mobile environment (differentiation and visibility of apps),where multiple apps are placed in a limited space at the same time. App interfaces inmobile environments must be visually differentiated within a small space due to screensize limitations and multiple app placement, and must be quickly recognized andselected by users. In addition, it can be speculated that the influence of experiencebrand, which centers on the brand touch points of customer experience rather thanlogotype, needs to be verified through further research.
