The research projects related to emotions have already been studied extensively in various fields such as psychology, sociology, literature, and video art. Around the 18th century, emotion was one of the key issues related to morality and values. Today, in the era of digital imaging, emotion still plays an essential role in the spread of information and the production of culture. In this respect, research on emotions can be said to be one of the important pending tasks that society has not yet completed.Documentary is a vital visual media(Cammaer Gerda, 2018), which can change the audience's attitude and thoughts through emotional construction and delivery of meaning through messages(Vlada Petric, 1978). Furthermore, it can form collective ideas and derive public opinions. In recent years, researches related to emotion have begun to attract the attention of documentary scholars. However, research pertaining to emotions has only been conducted on the periphery of the documentary research field yet, with relatively few results of related study, especially empirical ones. In the absence of detailed research and verification on specific factors such as the components, effects, and influencing factors of the documentary’s empathy effect, this paper aims to plot the development of the theory of documentary emotional construction by supplementing the deficiencies of the documentary empathy effect research. Based on constructivist emotional theory and narrative theory, this study explored how documentaries elicit the audience’s emotional consent, and what are the emotional effects of documentaries and their empathy effects. The purpose of this research is to present ways to organize a documentary’s emotion by understanding in detail the emotional elements and expression methods of the documentary, and the factors that affect the audience's empathy. In order to understand the general rules of the four emotional elements involved in the construction of emotions in the documentary, the study analyzed five documentaries with the best empathy effect published on Douban Wang, the largest and most prestigious review platform in China. And, we analyzed emotional elements in four aspects, focusing on character relationships, character status, emotional tendencies, and deeper meanings of language, such as the main emotional type, flow process, and space-emotion relationship, based on sentiment semiotics, emotional narrative, and emotion sociology theory. As a result, the study found the universal rules of documentaries that constitute three emotions of sympathy, nostalgia and anger under the influence of four elements: characters, language, story, and space. In addition, additional data analysis was conducted to confirm and explain the relationship between these four emotional elements of the documentary and the empathy effects more in detail. Vocabulary frequency statistics, clustering, affective computing, and analysis were performed to analyze the reason why these five documentaries affect the emotional construction on the Chinese audience and the audience's emotional acceptance. In conclusion, we found that the audience's emotions were mainly influenced by the four elements of characters, language, story, and space. This is consistent with the view that the characters, language, story, and space based on narrative immersion and speech act theory are the critical elements of constructing the documentary's emotions(Austin, 1975; Lindquist, 2015; Marie-Laure Ryan, 2019).In this study, a construction model of emotions in a documentary was also proposed, verified, and interpreted based on the constructionist perspective. In particular, it should be noted that the process of composing emotions in documentaries shall not be simplified by formulae, but relatively scientific and accurate big data mining technology allows us to understand the methods and rules of expressing emotions in documentaries. Such documentary emotional construction model is worth referring to in promoting the industrialization of documentaries in that it is possible to increase the suitability between documentary creation and market demand and the audience’s emotional preference.
