Purpose: The aim of this study is to compare how occupational therapists and affected parents perceive the theoretical school-based occupational therapy (SBOT) service design, especially regarding the priorities of SBOT, areas where a multidisciplinary team approach is needed, and strategies for improving SBOT. In doing so, the researchers gathered information that can make the school environment for children living with disabilities more user centered and more multidisciplinary in its support structure. Method: Over a period of 4 weeks, from February 10, 2020, to March 9, 2020, an online survey was conducted using purposive and snowball sampling from 88 school-based occupational therapists and parents who received special education-related services. In the end, a total of 29 therapists and 120 parents responded to the questionnaire. Results: Over half of the participating parents agreed that "the improvement of the practical aspect, as well as the quantitative expansion of the service for children with disabilities in the school, is necessary" (54.2%). Conversely, participating therapists indicated that all proposed SBOT service design items could be implemented in their everyday practice 70% of the time or more. However, the two groups showed statistically significant differences in three areas of SBOT-related questioning: how they expected to provide/receive a service; which services were more important; and which services required a multidisciplinary team approach. In particular, parents gave priority to two items of service: “improvement of small muscle training and hand manipulation skills and provision of specific exercise or sensory skills to students” and “improvement of students’ adaptability and ability through therapeutic activities within educational programs.” In this study, “the extent to which a service was provided” was found to be the sole factor predicting how parents perceived the “student–school environment fit” (F (4, 113) = 9.427, p < .0005, and adjusted R2=.224). Conclusion/Implications: The results of this study indicate the importance of social support (whether from parents or a multidisciplinary team) and the institutional environment (the school system) for children with disabilities. Further studies should be conducted to integrate these factors in such a way as to realize SBOT for students with disabilities.
