The purpose of this study is to pay attention to a concept of ‘branding’ which is prevalently used in modern society along with its action, and to reconsider meaning of the branding through the concept of ‘gesture’ proposed in by Vilem Flusser, a media ph ilosopher. In modern society, capitalism and ‘branding’ are in an inevitable relationship by their nature, and the branding is gaining a stronger foothold than ever as companies and individuals have an increased tendency to differentiate themselves through development of the media. As a result, it is easily seen that people have a complete confidence in the branding as if actions that arise in society can all be explained by an expression of the ‘branding’. All, from the ordinary actions for differentiating individual social network services by preferences and concepts to the companies’ soci al actions for making profits, are concluded as a word ‘branding’. In this study, the history and concept of the branding and how it has been de veloped were investig ated, and the ‘gesture of branding’ was interpreted based on Flusser’s ‘Theory of Gestures’. Flusser’s Theory of Gestures is that the motive and meaning of the ‘gesture’ are expressed by the movement s, for which interpreting the meaning, not analyzing a causal relationship, is required to be studied. An act of branding is connected to the economic structure, so-called capitalism, socially and to the freedom of self-expression resulted from development of the media culturally, and its motive of ‘making a profit’ is clearly revealed. Hence, it was seen that the branding and its meaning behind can be explained by the concept of ‘gesture’. In this study, the previous branding cases were summarized based on the sixteen gestures proposed by Flusser and a connection between the two concepts were examined, and the act of branding was defined as the ‘gesture’ in the modern view. According to Flusser, explaining a causal relationship is ‘reading’ the world while explaining a motive is ‘reading’ a method existed in the world. This study has a significance in that the meaning behind the gesture of branding and the internal factors expressed by the modern society, in which the branding is widely spread, were investigated. Different from the previous studies where the branding was analyzed in terms of the customers by connecting to the commercial intention, this study will contribute to the diversification of study direction towards the branding.
