The in-situ polymerization of uniaxially oriented reactive mesogens resulting in an anisotropic polymer film can be applied in various applications in liquid crystal displays (LCDs).The first part of this work aimed to fabricate ultra-thin coatable polarizer based on “host-guest” effect between highly ordered liquid crystalline monomer and dichroic dye. We designed and synthesized new reactive mesogens based on the tolane core structure (MAT and DAT) as the host material. Structures of the synthesized reactive mesogens were characterized by 1H NMR spectroscopy. Their liquid crystalline behaviors were studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), polarized optical microscopy (POM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) methods. MAT and DAT reactive mesogens exhibit highly ordered smectic A phase. This thesis described the fabrication of “host-guest” thin-film polarizers either in a sandwich cell or on a single substrate by in-situ polymerization of the aligned “host-guest” mixture. The dichroic ratio (DR) and order parameter (S) of the polarizer samples were determined with polarized UV-Vis spectroscopy. The “host-guest” effect between the polymerizable reactive mesogens and dichroic dyes was investigated. The high dichroism was achieved when the π-conjugation length of the “guest” dichroic dye molecule is matched with the “host” liquid crystals. Upon polymerization, the decreasing of DR and S values were observed, which is unavoidable in the “host-guest” system. For DAT +DAD mixture, the thin film polarizer showed DR = 19.2 and S = 0.86, respectively, after photopolymerization. The coatable polarizer was also fabricated on a single substrate by using the DAT reactive mesogen and a commercial black dye through spin-coating method. The fabricated coatable polarizer sample with the thickness of 4 μm showed DR = 16.4 and S = 0.84, and the degree of polarization (DOP) was 99.3% at a single transmittance of 34.5%. The resulting coatable polarizers possess a considerable solvent resistance, and thermal stability with robust mechanical properties. Finally, we prepared the TN-mode LC cell by using the prepared coatable polarizer inside of the cell, in which the coatable polarizer acted as a polarizer and an alignment layer, simultaneously. This could decrease the device thickness as well as the parallax issue. We believe that the coatable polarizer proposed in this study possesses high potential to be an alternative for the conventional H-sheet polarizers in LCD and flexible display applications such as anti-reflection layers for OLED devices. The second part of this thesis demonstrated a new polyimide-free photoalignment method to achieve homogeneous alignment of LCs by doping a new reactive mesogen with the host LCs in a subsequent irradiation of linearly polarized UV light. We designed and synthesized a new reactive mesogen (CRM) containing cinnamate moiety in the core structure. The structure of CRM was characterized by 1H NMR and FT-IR, and its liquid crystalline property was investigated by DSC and POM. The uniaxial homogeneous alignment of liquid crystals was achieved in-situ by irradiating the conventional LC mixture doped with a small amount of CRM in a sandwich cell of in-plane switching mode (CRM-IPS) with linearly polarized UV light at 95 °C. Compared to the conventional LC cell with rubbed polyimide alignment layers (PI-IPS), the photoaligned IPS cell (CRM-IPS) exhibited an equivalent level of alignment state and electro-optical properties with outstanding anchoring stability and durability. Moreover, the cell showed an excellent dark state with a low light leakage due to the automatic compliance of optical axes. This confirmed that the photo-induced alignment of LCs by CRM possesses outstanding alignment capability compared to the conventional rubbed polyimide alignment layer. We expect that this fabrication method is a promising candidate for cost-effective, green-manufacturing, and high-quality alignment method for the manufacturing of high-resolution LCDs.
