The purpose of this study is to compare features of intimate partner violence of China and Korea and to analyze effects of the risk factors which, in this study, are focused on gender role attitudes and alcohol dependence. Furthermore, the study aims to provide practical implications regarding intimate partner violence in each country. The study used two data sets from projects conducted by Emery's research team at the graduate school of social welfare, Yonsei University: ‘the Beijing-Seoul Families and Neighborhoods Study (BSFNS)' and ‘the Families and Neighborhoods Survey: Experiment (FNSE)'. Both studies were conducted using a representative random probability cluster sampling method. In this study, 201 Chinese males from 50 jiedaos in the BSFNS data and 100 Korean males from 5 dongs in FNSE data were used. Descriptive analysis and frequency analysis were carried out to examine key variables, random effect regression models were used in order to test hypotheses. Results are as follows: 1) 15.4% of the total respondents reported using physical violence to the wife in the past one year with 4.7% resulting in an actual physical harm; 19.4% of the Chinese male and 7.0% of the Korean male used physical violence and respectively reported 5.0% and 4.0% of physical harm done. There was no statistically significant difference in intimate partner violence between the two nations. Chinese males reported a statistically higher score on gender role attitudes and alcohol dependence. 2) As research hypotheses were tested, both Chinese and Korean males' gender role attitudes had a positive relationship with intimate partner violence. For Korean males, gender role attitude, alcohol dependence, and the interaction term of the two showed a statistically significant effect on intimate partner violence. However, for Chinese males there was no interaction effect of alcohol dependence, yet the younger males exhibited more severe intimate partner violence.Based on the research findings, the following implications were deduced. First, the need for ways to change gender role attitudes in both countries were emphasized. Second, monitoring the perpetrator's problematic alcohol use and related medical intervention were suggested for reducing intimate partner violence in Korea. Third, promoting gender equality through education was encouraged especially for young couples in China. Finally, providing holistic intervention services in Korea that both correct attitude toward intimate partner violence and treat problematic alcohol use were proposed.
