Smart composite laminated structures have been comprehensively employed in engineering fields since decades ago. In this paper, the modeling of smart composite laminate with actuator debonding and delamination failures were developed using an improved layerwise theory. The improved layerwise theory was modified by adding the Heaviside unit step function which can address the discontinuity of the displacement field, allowing for the sliding of the in-plane displacements and jump of the out-of-plane displacement at the debonded or delaminated interface. The general finite element method based formulations were derived using the four node plate element with linear Lagrange interpolation functions for the in-plane structural unknowns and electrical unknowns, and Hermite cubic interpolation functions for the out-of-plane structural unknowns. The extended Hamilton’s principle was adopted to derive the governing equation. Based on the developed governing equation, the dynamic characteristics were investigated by using the modal analysis, frequency analysis and transient analysis for both healthy laminate and damaged laminate. It is expected to observe the failure effect on the dynamic characteristics of smart composite laminate. And then, the developed modeling extent to the active vibration control, such as velocity feedback and optimal control. The actuator debonding influences the actuation ability and in return to decrease the control capability. Finally, a damage classification approach was developed using PCA for the smart composite laminate. The provided damage classification approach could efficiently classify the damage categories and evaluate the damage severity. This paper is a comprehensive study of smart composite laminated structures. The provided results well recovered the failure effect on the dynamic characteristics of smart composite laminates.
