This article presents a new approach for Fourier-based modeling of 3D geometries for compression and smoothing. By treating the surface as a level set of a 3D scalar field, we can model topologically complex models such as bones. Our approach accepts water-tight surface models as input, converts these to a volumetric description, performs Fourier-based processing onto it, and then uses iso-surfacing techniques to convert the result back to polygons. In the middle of Fourier-based processing, a set of three-variable Fourier descriptors is obtained. Utilizing the fact that a small fraction of these Fourier descriptors can be enough to represent the shape faithfully, compression and smoothing can be done neatly by truncating this complete set of Fourier descriptors. In particular, we employ a signed distance field as the volumetric description, which allows continuity over the surrounding volume of the surface. This allows avoiding Gibbs phenomena which previous volume-based methods have suffered from, returning better results in compression and smoothing than other scalar fields. We demonstrate the efficacy of the proposed method by showing results with various bone data and comparing performance of six representative 3D scalar fields on compression and smoothing.
