Modern poets translated and created Chinese poetry. In particular, it is believed that modern poets learned Chinese literature in their childhood, and thus would have been influenced by Chinese poetry while creating Korean literature and poetry. Choi Nam-sun a pioneer of modern poetry, was the first poet to translate Chinese poetry in the 20th century. Kim Eok is mentioned as a representative poet along with Choi Nam-sun in the formation period of the modern literature. He was known to have translated nearly 800 Chinese poems, and was the first to publish them in his poetry collection.ᅠLee Byeong-gi translated 82 Chinese poems, but his translations have not been sufficiently researched. In 1917, Choi Nam-sun translated seven Chinese Tang Dynasty poems eitherᅠinto fixed regular poems, four-line poems retaining the original forms or into shorter lines than the original form. He further tested Korean poetry's prosody structure by translating poems into 2 feet meter, 3 feet meter, and 4 feet meter. Kim Eok translated both the five-word and seven-word Chinese poems into 3 feet meter, thus introducing his poetic form. However, the translation of five-word poems should have been shorter than the seven-word poems in principle. Lee Byung-ki translated various Chinese poems by the Tang poet Li Bai. In terms of the prosody structure, he tends to maintain a traditional Korean rhythm of 3 feet meter and 4 feet meter, but seems to have improved the accuracy of translation without a fixed rhythm. However, it is regrettable that the aesthetic sense and the rhyme of Chinese poetry were not properly utilized. Therefore, it was found that the three poets attempted to maintainᅠthe appropriate form of translated poetry to emphasize on ethnicity. However, the translations by modern poets appear to be flawed to suit the author's emotions without a certain prosody structure. In particular, considering the relationship between the Chinese poetry prosody and the traditional Korean prosody when translating Chinese poetry, this paper also attempted to present the rules of translation that can be applied using the corresponding Korean poetry.
