Objectives: This study aimed to explore the motivations underlying mask-wearing among adolescents who continued this behavior after the conclusion of the May 2023 COVID-19 emergency. Methods: A sample of 300 students spanning grades 8 to 12, who voluntarily maintained mask usage for one month post-mandate, participated in this research. We investigated various factors, encompassing motives for wearing masks, perceived COVID-19 stress, health belief models, fear of negative evaluation, public self-consciousness, body image, emotional-behavioral characteristics, peer conformity, social stigma, and social interaction anxiety. Analytical procedures encompassed demographic assessments, t-tests, latent profile analysis, chi-square tests, and analysis of variance. Results: Significant distinctions emerged concerning motivations for mask-wearing, encompassing fear of negative evaluation, public awareness, appearance orientation, self-perceived appearance, perceived health belief model sensitivity and severity, and emotional-behavioral traits. Latent profile analysis classified participants into five categories: confident, other-oriented, normal, self-oriented, and unstable. Demographic characteristics displayed no variance, yet disparities materialized in mask-wearing patterns and psychological attributes. The confident and normal types exhibited adaptability, while the self-oriented and unstable types manifested psychological challenges. Discussion: These findings suggest that adolescent mask-wearing transcends health considerations, driven by a complex interplay of cultural and psychological factors. Masks may serve as a coping mechanism for psychological distress, marking mask-wearing as a burgeoning youth cultural phenomenon with far-reaching implications for youth psychology. Limitations of this study and suggestions for future research are discussed.
