After the Liberation, the Korean art world has presented various solutions to shape ‘Koreanness’. Especially in the Western-style painters’ society, they sought unique formativeness by using materials familiar to Koreans and various techniques of Oriental painting. However, each field that engaged in material experiments had a different stance on this matter. While the Oriental painters combined abstraction and ink painting to achieve ‘modernity’, the Western-style painters introduced the materiality and techniques of paper, brushes, and ink to connect tradition and Koreanness with a goal of achieving modernism in accordance with the international trend. Among the Western-style painters that utilized the materiality and techniques of Oriental painting is Chang Ucchin. With various techniques of Oriental painting, Chang refreshingly expressed Korea-related topics relatable to every Korean. From the paintings of the 1970s onwards, he made unique stains, used more diluted and paler coloring, and exposed the grid-like texture of the canvas fabric. Chang, who chose this formative style, presented the potentials of figuration in the Korean contemporary art world against its mainstream trend focusing on various abstractions like Dansaekhwa(monochromatic paintings). Through the study of various materials and techniques, he accomplished a unique Korean modernism.
