Throughout history, Guizhou has been a vital player in the politics and economy of the tea industry, as well as a crucial support for frontier regions. However, knowledge about Guizhou tea, especially its nationwide circulation, remains limited. Guizhou has a long history of tea production, offering it as tribute to the central government since the Shang and Zhou dynasties. Government control and heavy taxation on tea production have been prevalent since the Tang Dynasty. Guizhou tea has served as a means to manage and maintain ethnic relations with frontier minorities during conflicts with the central government. It has acted as a unifying force, connecting people of different ethnicities in Guizhou with the central government, border regions, and the mainland. This paper explores the historical journey of Guizhou tea through tribute tea, border governance through tea, and tea trade, highlighting its quality, cultural significance, and impact on the economy and politics.
