The purpose of this study was to determine how a controlling coaching strategy affects elite kumdo athletes' intention to quit exercising and to test whether a compromising conflict management strategy can induce a mitigating effect by moderating the relationship between them. The participants of the study were 240 kumdo players registered as athletes with the Korean Sport & Olympic Committee, and data were collected by conducting a survey using Google-Form. The following results were derived by analyzing the data of subjects who responded to the controlling coaching, conflict management strategy, and intention to quit exercising questionnaire. First, controlling coaching had a positive (+) correlation with the intention to quit exercising, and a positive (+) correlation with conflict management, but there was no statistical significance. Additionally, it was found that there was a negative correlation between controlling coaching and conflict management. Second, controlling coaching had a significant positive (+) effect on the intention to quit exercising, and conflict management also appeared to have a significant negative (-) effect on the intention to quit exercising. The interaction between controlling coaching and compromising conflict management also showed a significant negative effect. As a result of conducting a simple slope test for the interaction effect, it was found that the intention to quit exercising significantly increased as controlling coaching increased in the groups with low and medium conflict management strategies, but in the group with high conflict management strategies, the mitigating effect of controlled coaching was proven by showing that intention to quit exercising did not significantly increase even when controlled coaching increased
