Fountain code decoding is simple for erasure channels. This paper proposes methods to change an error channel and an error-erasure channel to an erasure channel. The error-erasure channel converter has been submitted for a petty patent. These methods can be applied for any linear codes with packet-sized symbols. With the null combination concept and padded symbols, the error symbol positions can be identified. They will then be converted to erasures. Simulations are done for codes with randomly generated parity check sequences and 32-bit symbols. Results show that the decoding performance remains unchanged with 5 different values of probability of error and probability of erasure given that their sum remains the same. Codeword with fewer data symbol has better probability of decoding success for the same overhead.
