In this paper a Biquad Filter called Universal Filter is designed for reducing power quality-based problems in power distribution systems. Increased use of solid-state power electronic based devices and loads requires shunt active power compensation techniques for mitigation. The Biquad Active Filter is a second order filter offering all four basic filters viz high pass, band pass, low pass, notch filter. In this paper bandpass and low pass filter are of prime importance as they are used for estimating the peak of the load current. It can be tuned by varying the quality factor and center frequency. The compensation technique is designed in MATLAB environment and its performance is experimentally verified using dSPACE- 1104.
