Laser performance of Er 3+ -doped Y 2 O 3 ceramic is reported for the first time. Resonantly-pumped, eyesafe, 1.6-μm Er:Y 2 O 3 cryo-laser slope efficiency of ∼48% and output power ∼ 7 W have been achieved in this first experiment.
