The usage of single switch converters in high power applications, and implementation of silicon carbide power transistor for efficient, simple power supply design is presented. System impact of SiC power devices in power converter applications were explored, showing not only technical benefits but also cost aspects. For overall efficiency increase in resonant reset forward converter, new zero-voltage-switch-on operating mode is obtained. Proposed converter approach utilises the semiconductor devices more efficiently, attain higher power density and lower system costs. Variable frequency control, realised with low cost control IC, and experimental results of an 1000 W prototype, confirming the theoretical calculations, finalise the paper.
