We propose the characteristic particle swarm optimization (CPSO) for the inverse design of nanophotonic devices. Compared with the traditional PSO algorithm, the proposed method has fewer variables and thus a faster rise speed. It can break through the limitations brought by traditional PSO algorithm to obtain better device performance. We verify the feasibility of the CPSO through the design of a silicon-on-insulator grating coupler. The CPSO is suitable for the design of nanophotonic devices with large parameter space.
