Highlights •Terminal groups had effect on the micromorphology and electrochromic properties of pentaaniline derivatives.•Pentaaniline with more hydrogen bonding terminal groups had denser molecular arrangement and smoother surface morphology.•Pentaaniline derivatives with denser molecular arrangement possessed slower ion conduction and longer switching time.•Carboxyl-capped pentaaniline presented best electrochromic performance and cycle stability.
