The article focuses on a detailed database of all fire deaths that occurred in the state of Victoria from February 1998 to August 2007 designed to identify the most important risk factors for death in fire. Comparisons were made for commonly known risk factor for death in fire between older adult, adult and child fire fatalities. The analysis found that most people who died in fires were involved in some way with the ignition and many at risk older people experienced near misses in the past.
