A tall structure of tower crane for hoisting wind turbine components is prone to back-tipping failure as sudden unloading. It is necessary to study the dynamic characteristics of the tower crane with anti-back-tipping device for the safety. The modal analysis is performed to calculate natural frequencies and corresponding mode shapes. The impact of Rayleigh damping is considered, and the nonlinear dynamic characteristics of the boom tower crane as sudden unloading is analyzed by the finite element method. Then, the simulation results are used to evaluate the concerned component of the crane to prevent failure. The different pressure of load distribution plate caused by sudden unloading is especially paid attention. Through the above studies, the reference for failure prevention and engineering practice is provided. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
