This article investigates abilities of university students in making assumptions in a ballistics model. The students were asked to make reasonable assumptions in a ballistics model often encountered in mechanics. The objects ranged from stones thrown by catapults in ancient times to launching projectiles and missiles from recent history. Students' responses to the questionnaire regarding their assumptions are presented and analysed in the article. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
