CHINA. Chaoshan, Guangdong Province. 2012. Yingge Dance. A combination of dance, martial arts, and traditional opera acting. Popular in Shantou and Teochew, this dance is the most representative form of folk arts. Its theme originated from one of the most important Chinese novels of all time, 'Outlaws of the Marsh.' The dance is performed during important festivals throughout the year including the Lantern Festival and Spring Festival. The dance is divided into three parts: a masculine group dance, a variety of plays and misc. programs, and finally a show of martial arts. The performers vary in numbers from 24 to 108 members depending on the number of available participants.
