The article examines the efforts of U.S.-based English teachers in creating alternatives to tracking and ability grouping in teaching mixed classes. Alternative teaching, which is often referred to as detracking, include programs that are far more than re-grouping and altering education by increasing and spreading quality learning to students. According to the report, detracking involves highly normative and political attempt to provide deeply held cultural beliefs, ideologies and fiercely protected arrangements of materials, and political advantage in local communities.
