Single-gender classes are spreading in public schools across South Carolina. Such classes have rapidly expanded in South Carolina from approximately 70 schools in 2007 to more than 200 in 2008, partly because they can be implemented quickly, in various formats, and at a low cost. Moreover, a close partnership among the South Carolina Department of Education, local schools, and parents has resulted in successful implementation of the programs. Overall, there has been increased academic performance and decreased disciplinary issues for boys and girls in single-gender classes, and an overwhelming 76 percent of parents are satisfied with the implementation of the single-gender program at their schools.
