A unit of study on World War I used posters produced mainly by the U.S. government to help students think critically about history and the media. The teacher discussed the events leading up the war and how the U.S. became involved using several primary and secondary sources and then used posters to focus on the government's use of propaganda to encourage support at home for the war. The discussions required students to recall factual information and apply it to a shared problem and generated an excitement in the classroom that is not present when the teacher relies solely on the text.
