The authors conducted a study to determine the degree to which principals use research-based interviewing practices and found that educational leaders frequently report using recommended practices. This study is a part of a larger study in which the extant research literature on qualities of effective teachers and selection interviews were synthesized as a step in developing an instrument that included an anchored rating scale that was validated through a national survey. Three hundred practicing principals received a survey about their interviewing practices at the building level. Principals reported that they often use techniques (e.g., structured interviews, note taking, anchored rubrics, and experience-based questions that enhance the validity and reliability of the interview.
