The Meleiha-El Hamra pipeline, 103 miles long and 16 in. in diameter, was placed in service in mid-November of last year to improve the economics for companies holding concessions in the Western Desert of Egypt. Approval for the project was given in mid-1985; detailed engineering, procurement, and construction work were started at the beginning of February 1986 with delivery of oil to El Hamra 42 weeks later, Nov. 14, 1986, as scheduled. This article describes the waxy crude which flows thru the system. Also described are the control and communications as well as the quality control procedures.
