Radiological sectional imaging diagnostics are now an integral component of the routine clinical practice in cardiac surgery and provide a wide range of possibilities in the primary diagnostics, preoperative planning and postoperative management. This is highlighted by current guideline recommendations in which computed tomography (CT) coronary angiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are clearly gaining in importance. Awareness of the imaging options as well as their contraindications and limitations are the foundation for a targeted interdisciplinary cooperation. This article provides a practical overview of the individual imaging modalities and indications and furthermore underlines the special requirements with respect to patient preparation.
