Certification of sleep laboratories is a necessary requirement to ensure quality assurance for the operation of a sleep laboratory and has been offered and carried out by the Austrian Sleep Research Association, an interdisciplinary scientific society, since 1998. It has been a voluntary measure to date. Since this assessment can only ever represent a single point in time, regular re-evaluation is necessary. After initial certification, which includes an inspection, recertification is required at 5‑year intervals and an annual update on any changes. The level scheme presented here allows the assignment of 0 = application for certification, via 1A–C = fulfillment of the quality requirements, to level 2 = non-fulfillment of the requirements at the end of the inspection. The application for recertification also underlines the sleep laboratory’s interest in continuous quality assurance.
