In Buddhism, Jehaengmusang(諸行無常), the arising and passing away of all things, i s considered the first of the Three Dharma Seals. This article aims to compare and examine the Buddhist concept of Jehaengmusang with Whitehead"s process philosophy. In Early Buddhism, Jehaengmusang was a concept that stood in opposition to Hinduism and involved the denial of an eternal and immutable Atman. Buddha"s doctrine of Jehaengmusang was a generalization of his empirical insights, where he denied the existence of an eternal and immutable Atman because he observed that everything has a process of arising and passing away. Similarly, Whitehead developed a process philosophy that regarded reality as process, opposed to substantialism. He formalized the process of becoming and perishing as an atomic theory. This paper argues that Whitehead"s understanding of the process coincides with Buddha"s insight into Jehaengmusang. However, Whitehead distinguished between reality and substance, opposing substance but not reality itself. In contrast, in Buddhist philosophy after Buddha, substance and reality were often confused, leading to the abandonment of atomism[theory of paramanu as reality] in favor of idealism in Mahayana Buddhism. The Madhyamika School, which taught the doctrine of Mujaseong(無自性, non-self-existence), opposed substantialism and did not seek the possibility of realistic Buddhism. The Yogācāra School, another Mahayana Buddhism, argued for the theory of selfbegetting mutation of Vijnana(識, consciousness). This article accepts the Buddha"s theory of ‘arising and passing away’ based on arising and passing away as process realism and reintroduces atomistic Buddhism as momentary(刹那, ksana) realism. Therefore, this thesis aims to reestablish the process atomism theory of Buddha"s insight into the ‘arising and passing away’(無常), offering a new perspective on Buddhism in the 21st century.
