Kim Bokjin, the first modern sculptor in Korea, left his huge footprints and greatly influenced diverse areas such as art education, newspaper press, criticism, as well as fine art. His artistic movements show remarkable difference between the two periods before and after his prison life due to his socialist activites and independent movement. The first period during the 1920s, after his returning from the Tokyo Art School in Japan, is characterized particularly by his activities of organizing the ‘ PASCULA’ group and ‘(KAPF).’ Kim Bokjin used the term ‘Hyensung Yesul(formative art),’ under the influence from Japanese avant-garde group ‘(MAVO),’ instead of ‘Johyung Yesul(plastic art)’ as a translated word of ‘bildende Kunst’ by Konrad Fiedler . He denied the way of abstract art that European art stepped forward with the concept of Fiedler’s ‘pure visibility’ but adhered to the position of Constructivism in order to accomplish the concurrence of art and life in the colony Joseon. After his imprisonment, however, Kim exhibited a quite different aspect by concentrating on Buddhist sculptures from that of the period when he professed the construction of proletariat art. Though these works seem to be a severance of the former period to all outward appearances, but are observed as the outcome that he did not remain imitating his contemporary avant-garde arts or new trends in Europe or in Japan but made efforts to amalgamate them with Korean culture tradition. Expressed his ambition, “ … figure out the true beauty of art, leave unprecedented art work, complete the colossal Buddhist statue for Beopjusa Temple of Songnisan Mountain and a Buddhist sculpture for Cheongju Yonhwasa Temple, and, in the last place, publish the history of East art, by devoting the rest of my whole life,” Kim Bokjin investigated the tradition of Korean culture and attempted to fuse it with the creativity of modern art. He particularly paid his attention to Seokguram Grotto, the most famous cultural heritage of Tong-il Silla (United Silla) to try to inherit and adopt its cultural and artistic value in his works. We can find a significance in his art in terms that Kim Bokjin personally projected his Buddhist faith with such an artistic style to his sculptures but publicly made his efforts to encourage Joseonian people with national pride by establishing modern plastic art toward a different way from European abstract art based on Fiedler’s art theory, by producing gigantic statues of Maitreya so as to represent the yearn for a new world through the liberation and independence of Joseon from the Japanese colonialism.
