The COVID-19 pandemic has brought extreme shocks linked to business survival. These challenges include mobility restrictions, disruptions in production and supply chains, decreased consumption, and declining business investment globally. Firmresilience has become crucial for companies to survive, gaining attention in academia and the business field. However, a clear definition of firmresilience and its key factors for SMEs are still in the exploratory stage, with insufficient empirical research on its relationship with business performance. Companies must withstand external shocks, explore opportunities, and sustain growth. This study on 197 South Korean SMEs confirms entrepreneurial orientation and digital capabilities as key factors for competitive advantage and sustained growth. It reveals that firm resilience acts as a crucial capability, mediating the relationship between entrepreneurial orientation, digital capabilities, and firm performance, enabling significant growth beyond pre-shock levels. Implications of this study include confirming the importance of entrepreneurial orientation and digital capabilities in enhancing firm resilience, identifying subconstructs of firm resilience as proactive reasilience capability and reactive resilience capabilities, and recognizing the need to explore new opportunities and achieve greater growth. Empirically demonstrating the key drivers of firm resilience and their integrated relationship with firm performance provides academic insights for SMEs in the exploratory stage. It suggests that resource-constrained SMEs should invest in entrepreneurial orientation, digital capabilities, and enhancing firmresilience to secure a competitive advantage.
