Despite recent advances in the use of axial opioids for obstetric analgesia, the problem of side effects still exists. Research in this area continues to explore the appropriate combination of opioid, local anaesthetic and possibly other agents that will produce effective analgesia with minimal effects on the mother, her newborn and the progress of labour.
